Digressions: My Life in 500 Words or Less
This time of year is special for several reasons: the changing fall colors, the onset of sweater weather, the earlier daily arrival of the darkness of night, the sense of foreboding in the air and, of course, Halloween.
It’s no secret Halloween is a favorite holiday for me. What's not to love? Thrills, chills and candy.
But it’s more than that.
For me, Halloween represents the acknowledgment of borders. It represents the border between long days to expanded evenings It represents the border between waning outdoor activity to increasing indoor isolation. It represents the border between the known and the unknown.
OK, so it’s the costumes and candy.
I enjoy dressing in costumes and eating lots of candy.
There. I said it.
But, again, it’s more than that, really.
Creepiness, spookiness and eeriness notwithstanding, Halloween represents a fun time for children and adults alike. I enjoy the trick-or-treaters. I enjoy the decorations. And I enjoy the themed social gatherings. Not only are they new experiences that become memories, they evoke memories during my new experiences.
So, boo! Here’s to a Happy Halloween to you.
Enjoy the thrills. Enjoy the chills.
And, of course, enjoy the candy.
